SmartEnCity National Network News: The Estonian Smart City Club met virtually
On 4th November, the Estonian Smart City Club met again, but this time due to circumstances, virtually. In addition to the local SmartEnCity project team members (from the Institute of Baltic Studies, Tartu Regional Energy Agency, Telia and the University of Tartu), representatives from the cities of Tartu, Pärnu, Paide, Tallinn, Valga, Viljandi and Jõhvi were also present. The group was happy to meet and to get to know its newest member of the club – Pärnu, which was represented by members of the city government.
Lighthouse City Tartu held its Planning Conference 2020
On 5th of November, the 6th Tartu Planning conference was organised by SmartEnCity project partner University of Tartu (UTAR), due to the pandemic situation, this time virtually. This annual conference has become an important information exchange platform for urban and regional planners, researchers, NGOs, politicians and others.
Estonian municipalities of Pärnu and Lääne county visited Smart Tartu
Lighthouse City Tartu had recently even two visits to inform about SmartEnCity activities. The City Pärnu as well as representatives of severval municipalities from Lääne county came to learn and to look, and to admire the famous wall paintings.
The public discussion on Tartu’s new Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan has started.
The public discussion on the new Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) of Lighthouse City Tartu has started and attracted nearly 200 participants. This shows that the new plan is an important public issue and that many citizens are making use of their right of participation.
SmartEnCity was part of the SCIS Final Conference
The end of the Smart Cities Information System (SCIS) was celebrated during a 2-day conference on 4 and 5 November with nearly 200 participants and 19 sessions, with 44 speakers from cities, businesses, research institutions and the financial sector. The conference covered a wide range of topics – from storytelling to the important role of replication and upscaling as well as funding from EU sources and financing with private investors – and SmartEnCity project was part of it!
Lighthouse City Vitoria-Gasteiz announces VIP-visit in demo district Coronación
Yesterday, Basque Government’s Housing Minister, Iñaki Arriola and Vitoria-Gasteiz’s Mayor, Gorka Urtaran, visited accompanied by Visesa’s General Manager, Carlos Quindós, the retrofitting works that Visesa is carrying out in 26 buildings (302 dwellings) in Coronación demo district. The visit was also attended by the Deputy Mayor, Ana Oregi and the Deputy Housing Minister Pedro Jauregui.
Tartu pilot area housing association representatives discussed the new smart home system
On October 15, representatives of Tartu pilot area housing associations gathered for a both physical and virtual meeting to discuss the new developments regarding the smart home system. Due to the pandemic situation, the meeting was organised both physically and virtually, i.e. a live stream of the event was made available for anyone who did not feel comfortable attending in person.
The work of a grandmaster adorns the Tartu mural gallery
In September, the 15th SmartEnCity artwork in Tartu was created on the end wall of Kalevi 8 apartment building. The author of the artwork “Time I” is Vello Vinn, one of the most renowned and legendary printmakers and artists in Estonia.

First sculpture was installed in Tartu’s smart district
At the end of September, Tartu unveiled the first sculpture in framework of SmartEnCity project in front of Tiigi 19 apartment building. The sculpture is called “Polished diamond” and the author is the Estonian sculptor and installation artist Art Allmägi.
