One Tonne Saving of CO2 Emissions through Electric Bike Service for Municipal Staff in Lighthouse City Vitoria-Gasteiz

10 Feb 2022

Big success for the smart service for municipal staff in Lighthouse City Vitoria-Gasteiz: From February 2020 til December 2021, a total of 8150 km was covered with the use of the electric bicycles of the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council, which is equivalent to a saving of 1 tonne of CO2 emissions!

The electric bike-sharing service started operating in February 2020, addressing the municipal staff of the San Martín offices. It offers a sustainable alternative to the municipal car fleet in order to meet the work commuting needs.

Thanks to the funding of the European SmartEnCity project, the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council, through the Environmental Studies Centre, set up an automated electric bicycle lending station for municipal staff as a pilot project. Since then, 69 users have registered for the service.

In collaboration with the users, the system was tested and proved in order to identify any incidents during the tests and to improve the service.
