Smart Electric Buses for Vitoria-Gasteiz – Tender is now open24 Jul 2018
In June 2018, the City Council has launched a tender for the implementation of Smart Electric Buses (BEI = Bus Eléctrico Inteligente in Spanish) in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The development of this modern and innovative 100% electric transport system in the city has a budget of 44,691,341 Euros (VAT included) and will have a contribution of almost 400,000 Euros by SmartEnCity project to co-finance the charging infrastructure and vehicles.
Mayor Gorka Urtaran thanked "the institutional commitment" that allows Vitoria-Gasteiz to "continue working on the transition to 0 emissions" through an efficient public transport system with high capacity that will better connect all neighbourhoods of the city and will promote sustainable and healthy mobility.
The implementation of the entire project will take 65 weeks, counting from the signing of the contract (offers can be submitted here; deadline is September 14, 2018), which includes the drafting of the different steps, the construction of the necessary infrastructure, the interventions in the public space for the exclusive lanes of the BEI, the placement of the stops and their equipment and the manufacturing and launching of the vehicles as well as their maintenance.
The electric busses will provide service on the current line 2 (see picture) of the urban bus network of Vitoria-Gasteiz (which transported more than 3 million persons in 2017) and will be operated by the municipal company TUVISA. The BEI will have a route of just over 10 kilometres with 24 new stops per direction. The vehicles with avant-garde design and cutting-edge technology will have a frequency of 8 minutes and circulate on exclusive lanes during a large part of the route, having priority traffic lights at junctions and serving key points in the city such as the Txagorritxu Hospital, the Basque Government or the Mendizorrotza sport and leisure facilities.
Vitoria-Gasteiz is curious to see how these 13 new buses (7 of 18 meters length and 6 of 12 meters length) will prove themselves around the city. They will be 100% electric, equipped with innovative technology in areas such as user experience, information, safety systems and driving assistance. Regarding the charging infrastructure, vehicles can be loaded through a four-minute fast loading system using pantograph technology, with two loading points per line: on Boulevard commercial centre and Mendizorrotza. In the garages, in addition, the main charging will be made during night time, when the service is not in operation.
