Flexibility is a key element in an energy system that allows it to work. The system needs to meet varying demands with instant energy supply and this means that it needs to be flexible.

Today, the energy system in a city is flexible because fossil fuels can be stored and consumed on demand. However, as fossil fuels are phased out, the next question will arise: where the flexibility in the energy system will come from in the future? Will it come from the consumers or from the technologies installed in the city?
