On 1.-2. November, SmartEnCity project partner University of Tartu organised a planning conference. More than 350 participants from Estonian research institutions, public, private and third sectors were participating and discussing topics related to spatial planning.
The conference focused, among other things, on how to implement smart city solutions in local governments, followed by a tour to Tartu's pilot district to demonstrate SmartEnCity project efforts and solutions.
The given presentations specifically focused on energy management and integrated planning (Martin Kikas, TREA) and smart city technology solutions (Marek Alliksoo, Reach-U) in local governments. Then, in panel discussions comprising of presenters, representatives of Tartu and Elva municipalities, researchers from Tallinn University of Technology and inhabitants of Haapsalu town, it was discussed how the technological solutions of the smart city could be used in spatial planning of local municipalities. It was also debated how the smart city discourse could influence and change current spatial planning practices.
After the smart city session, the “Smartovka-Tour" lead by Tõnis Eelmaa (Smart City Lab), Andra Somelar (Institute of Baltic Studies) and Veronika Mooses (University of Tartu) took place to visit the SmartEnCity solution implemented in the pilot area of Lighthouse City Tartu.
