Lighthouse City Tartu: Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan now officially approved

20 Apr 2021

On April 1, the new sustainable climate and energy action plan of Tartu, Tartu Energy 2030, was voted on by the city municipal council and officially accepted.

The plan provides an overview of energy production and consumption in Tartu city, its impact on the environment and climate, and sets the goal of making energy use more efficient and to increase the production of renewable energy. Climate adaptation and awareness raising are also important parts of the plan.

As the goal of Tartu city is to become climate neutral by 2050, the interim goal is reducing CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030 (compared to the 2010 baseline year). The plan lists the strategic goals and activities to achieve this goal.

Based on Tartu citizens feedback that was gathered in autumn 2020, several changes and additions were made to the action plan. For example, using biomass in district heating and energy alternatives such as hydrogen are now included in the plan as well.
